Journey to the Pole of Cold

Salespeople on the Yakutsk outdoor fish market are looking to photographs I made two years ago of them and seem to be very happy to receive their promised photograph. Yakutsk is a city in the Russian Far East, located about 4 degrees (450 kilometres) south of the Arctic Circle. It is the capital of the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic in Russia with a major port on the Lena River. The city has a population of 264.000 (2009). Yakutsk is one of the coldest cities on Earth. The average monthly winter temperature in January is around -43,2 C. Yakutsk, Jakutsk, Yakutia, Russian Federation, Russia, RUS, 16.01.2010.
