The Ostrovany
Roma settlement Ostrovany. Marian with his family in front of their house located at the Roma settlement Ostrovany in East Slovakia. Marian: "We are devided (by the fence) - into white and the gypsies. When there was no fence some of the people stole just some fruits and vegetables. The "Berlin Wall" does not matter for us anymore, standing there already a few years. They were building it well." In 2010, the town of Ostrovany received international media attention when the town council built a wall dividing private gardens and the neighboring Roma settlement. Several media outlets compared the look of Ostrovany’s 150 m long wall with the Berlin Wall. Mayor Mr. Rehak sees the building as a "fence" and not a wall.
